DSL Service
What is DSL?: The word DSL stands for "Digital Subscriber Line". This is a broadband technology that uses a digital signal instead of the standard analog signal over a regular phone line. DSL does this by using the line’s higher frequencies that a telephone service doesn’t need. This allows the phone line to be split into three different channels. It will use one channel for regular telephone traffic, one for data being uploaded from your computer, and one for data being received by your computer.

Why do you need DSL for your home or business? It’s fast. No more time has to be wasted waiting on downloads or online reports. On average it can be up to 10x faster than dial-up. It’s always on. It doesn’t tie up your telephone while you’re online, as would a regular dial-up service. Existing telephone features such as caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding and even call return will not be affected.

Unlike other broadband connections such as a cable modem, your DSL connection is yours and yours alone. With a cable modem you share your bandwidth with other customers in your area. Shared connections can get slow when several users are on at the same time. With DSL the only things that affect your speed are the capability of the phone line and the speed of the computer at the other end.

What are the drawbacks to DSL? The biggest drawback to DSL is availability. The distance DSL can travel over regular phone lines is limited. Backroads currently offers DSL in the cities of Laurens, Clinton and Newberry. The following illustrates which services are available and in which cities.
